Open vs. Enclosed Car Transport: Which One Is Right for You?

When it’s time to ship a vehicle, one of the first decisions you’ll make is choosing between open and enclosed transport. Both methods get your car safely from point A to point B, but they differ in price, protection, and the type of vehicle each is best suited for. Understanding the difference upfront can save you money and help you avoid choosing a method that isn’t the right fit for your car.

Whether you’re shipping a daily driver, a family SUV, or a rare classic, the right transport method comes down to a few key factors: your budget, the value of your vehicle, and how much protection you want along the way.

Comparing Open and Enclosed Transport

Open transport is the industry standard, and for good reason. Vehicles are loaded onto a multi-car open trailer, the same kind you’ve probably seen hauling new cars down the highway. It’s the most widely available option, which means shorter wait times and more competitive pricing. For the vast majority of everyday vehicles, open transport is a perfectly safe and reliable way to ship a car.

Enclosed transport, on the other hand, keeps your vehicle fully covered inside a trailer, shielded from weather, road debris, and the eyes of other drivers. It’s the preferred choice for classic cars, exotic and luxury vehicles, and anything with a high replacement value or sentimental worth. Enclosed trailers typically carry fewer vehicles at a time, so this option costs more, but the added protection is often worth it for owners who want extra peace of mind.

Cost is usually the deciding factor for most people. Open transport tends to be more affordable simply because it’s more widely available and carriers can move more vehicles per trip. Enclosed car transport costs more due to limited trailer space and specialized handling, but it offers a level of protection that some vehicles genuinely need.

Beyond cost, think about your vehicle’s exposure. If you’re shipping a standard car, truck, or SUV, open transport will get the job done safely and affordably. But if you’re transporting a vehicle that’s irreplaceable, highly customized, or simply too valuable to risk exposure to the elements, enclosed transport is worth the extra investment. Many providers also offer convenient pickup and drop-off options, so you don’t have to sacrifice convenience no matter which method you choose.

There’s no universal right answer between open and enclosed transport — it depends on your vehicle, your budget, and your comfort level. For most everyday vehicles, open transport offers the best balance of affordability and reliability. For high-value, classic, or rare vehicles, enclosed transport provides the extra layer of protection that makes the added cost worthwhile. Whichever you choose, working with an experienced, fully insured provider ensures your vehicle arrives safely, on time, and exactly as it left.
