How Long Does a Driving Course in Maine Actually Take?

It’s one of the first questions parents ask when their teen starts talking about getting a license: how long is this going to take? The honest answer is that it depends on a few moving parts, including the classroom schedule, behind-the-wheel sessions, state permit rules, and how much practice your teen gets at home. Here’s a realistic look at the timeline so your family can plan ahead.

Breaking Down the Driver’s Ed Timeline in Maine

The Classroom Portion

Maine requires new drivers under 18 to complete an approved driver education course before they can get a learner’s permit. The classroom component covers traffic laws, road signs, defensive driving, and the everyday decision-making that keeps drivers safe. Depending on how a program schedules its sessions, this portion typically runs over several weeks. At Beal Driving Academy, students must be at least 15 by the first day of class, so many families plan enrollment around that birthday.

Behind-the-Wheel Training

Alongside the classroom work, students complete hands-on driving time with an instructor. Beal’s course includes 10 hours of one-on-one behind-the-wheel training, which gives teens room to build skills at their own pace, from basic vehicle control in quiet lots to navigating busier roads and highway merges. These sessions are usually spread across the course rather than packed into a single week.

The Permit Period and Practice Hours

Finishing driver’s ed is a big milestone, but it isn’t the finish line. In Maine, teens then hold a learner’s permit for at least six months and log supervised practice hours with a parent or guardian, 70 hours in total including some at night, before they’re eligible for the road test. This is where much of the real confidence gets built.

What Can Affect the Timeline

Scheduling, weather, and a student’s comfort level all play a role. Maine winters can pause practice sessions, and some teens simply need more repetition before they feel ready. That’s completely normal, and rushing the process rarely produces safer drivers. Adding a few extra driving lessons in Maine during the permit period is a simple way to keep skills sharp when home practice stalls.

From the first class to a full license, most Maine teens should expect the process to take somewhere between six months and a year. With more than 50 years of experience teaching students across Eastern and Central Maine, Beal Driving Academy helps families move through each stage with clear expectations and real confidence behind the wheel. If your teen is approaching 15, now is a great time to start planning.
