Hydro Jetting vs. Snaking: Which One Your Drain Actually Needs

Your drain backs up, you call somebody, and the first thing out of their mouth is a pitch for the most expensive option on the truck. Sound familiar? The truth is, hydro jetting and snaking both have their place, and the right choice depends on what’s actually going on inside your pipe — not on what somebody needs to sell this month. Here’s the straight talk on both, so you know what you’re paying for.

What Each Method Does (and Doesn’t Do)

Snaking. A snake is a steel cable with a cutting head that gets fed into the line and spun through the clog. It punches a hole through whatever’s blocking things up — hair, a wad of paper, a grease plug — and gets water moving again. It’s quick, it’s affordable, and for a simple, one-time clog in a sink or tub line, it’s often all you need.

The catch? A snake opens a path; it doesn’t clean the pipe. Grease coating the walls, scale buildup, and the fine roots that crept in through a joint mostly stay put. That’s why so many folks get their line snaked, feel great for a few months, and then find themselves calling again.

Hydro jetting. Hydro jetting — what we call the “Liquid Laser” around here — sends high-pressure water through the line and scours the pipe walls back to their original bore. It flushes grease, sludge, scale, and roots out of the system instead of just poking a hole through them. For main sewer lines, kitchen lines with years of grease, or any drain that keeps clogging, it’s usually the smarter money.

That said, jetting isn’t magic, and it isn’t for every pipe. Old, cracked, or badly deteriorated lines may not handle the pressure well. That’s why a camera inspection should come first on anything serious. You want to see what you’re dealing with before anybody starts blasting water at it.

So which one do you need? A simple rule of thumb:

  • One-off clog in a single fixture drain → a snake will probably do it.
  • Recurring backups, slow drains all over the house, or a main line full of grease or roots → hydro jetting.
  • Not sure, or your pipes are old → camera first, decision second.

Here’s what nobody in this business likes to say out loud: the cheaper fix is sometimes the right one, and a good plumber should tell you so. Calling an Eagle Rock plumber who’s been at this since 1995 should get you a straight answer on whether a snake will handle it or your line really needs the jetter. Whatever ends up happening, you should know why before the work starts — not after the bill shows up.
