Modern agriculture is filled with GPS guidance, self-propelled rigs, and diesel engines — but not every operation runs that way, and not every operation wants to. Across Plain communities and traditional farms throughout the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast, horse-drawn equipment isn’t a relic; it’s the backbone of daily fieldwork. When it comes to weed and pest control, that means finding sprayers built specifically for horse-drawn use, not adapted from tractor equipment as an afterthought. At Iva Mfg, we build equipment for the way growers actually farm — whether that’s behind a tractor or behind a team.
Built for the Way You Actually Farm
Horse-drawn farming isn’t about doing without modern effectiveness — it’s about applying that effectiveness through different equipment. A well-built horse-drawn sprayer still needs a durable tank, a reliable pump, and a boom that can cover ground evenly, all balanced correctly for a draft hitch instead of a three-point or trailer mount. Get that balance wrong and you end up with uneven coverage, wasted product, or a rig that’s hard on the team pulling it. Get it right, and horse-drawn spraying can be just as consistent and effective as anything running behind a tractor.
That said, horse-drawn operations often run alongside other equipment on the same farm — field crews using tractor sprayers for the bigger acreage, produce growers managing rows by hand or with smaller mounted sprayers, and orchard or lawn-and-garden setups covering the smaller plots in between. The equipment looks different from field to field, but the goal is the same: consistent, even coverage that protects the crop without wasting time or product.
Durability matters even more on a horse-drawn rig, since it’s working at a different pace and under different stresses than a tractor-mounted unit. Tanks, hitches, and booms need to hold up to years of daily use without constant repair. Every sprayer we build — horse-drawn or otherwise — is manufactured right here in the USA, built to the same standard of durability our customers have come to expect.
Conclusion
Traditional farming and effective equipment aren’t opposites — they just require sprayers built for the job at hand.
