The scale runs from mint, factory-fresh-looking balls at the top down to balls with more noticeable wear that are still perfectly playable, just priced accordingly.
AAAAA (Mint) balls show virtually no signs of play — no scuffs, no discoloration, no visible logo wear — and are effectively indistinguishable from a ball straight out of a new sleeve. AAAA (Near Mint) balls have only the faintest cosmetic marks, usually invisible unless you’re looking closely, with zero impact on flight or feel. AAA (Good) balls carry more obvious cosmetic wear, like scuff marks or minor discoloration, but remain structurally sound and perform just as well on the course.
The grade only ever describes the outside of the ball, not the core or the way it plays; a AAA ball hits the same distance and holds the same spin as a AAAAA of the identical model.
